How? Not sure - one or a combination of the following - added the line options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=2 to the file /etc/modules.conf, then rebooted with an sd card and a compactflash card in the reader. During the boot i got a config dialog (which had happened before), this time with sensible choices available.
