Stephen,
After I constructed that first email, I went back to 2.4.20. Checking
/proc/interrupts again shows:
CPU0 CPU1
0: 50273 64069 IO-APIC-edge timer
1: 2399 2811 IO-APIC-edge keyboard
2: 0 0 XT-PIC cascade
4: 3853 3599 IO-APIC-edge serial
5: 11028 11309 IO-APIC-edge serial
8: 0 1 IO-APIC-edge rtc
10: 4 0 IO-APIC-edge soundblaster
11: 2427 2438 IO-APIC-level ide2, ehci-hcd, usb-uhci
12: 0 0 IO-APIC-level usb-uhci, usb-uhci
14: 5108 6845 IO-APIC-edge ide0
15: 17 1 IO-APIC-edge ide1
NMI: 0 0
LOC: 114268 114267
ERR: 0
MIS: 0
I think this looks a bit more reasonable. It might be that there was
something about the move forward to 2.5.X that I didn't get accomplished
quite right - I did check all the min versions on software, and the
only thing I didn't have per the docs was iproute2. Everything else
met or exceeded the requirements in Changes.txt
