Tres, Welcome to the club. I had the same experience with my D-520 a few months ago. I never did get it to work. I ended up buying a USB card reader (SanDisk ImageMate 6 in 1), which does work as a mass storage device under linux. So, now I just remove the card from the D-520 and read it with the SanDisk reader.
The SanDisk reader was not exactly plug and play. But, with the help of some others on this list I got it to work with my Mandrake 8.2 system. If you decide to go this route, let me know and I'll tell you how I made the SanDisk reader work.
