For practical purposes I have solved the problem which launched this thread. Specifically, I can now mount my Zio SmartMedia card. What does not work for me is attempting to load the drivers by means of insmod or modprobe commands executed from my shell script just prior to the mount command. Now I have placed those commands ( /sbin/modprobe/uhci; /sbin/modprobe/usb-storage ) inside /etc/rc.d/rc.modules so that they are executed as part of the boot sequence. (I have Slackware 8.1, Linux 2.4.18). Now the mount in my shellscript works ok. It can be either self-contained or it can depend upon an /etc/fstab entry. It takes only seconds - not minutes as has been reported by others - to complete the mount. Furthermore, although for my purposes a read-only mount suffices, I have successfully tested a read/write mount. My tests have been with a 16Mb SmartMedia and it would be interesting to try with a higher capacity card.
