A quick look at your logs shows that you might have some underlying USB issue
- - it is a bit difficult to tell without the context, but
CDCEther.c: rx status -84
CDCEther.c: BULK IN callback but driver is not active!

isn't normal (unless you did something like unplug the modem?), and might be
associated with an underlying usb-uhci problem.

Okay... I can accept that... I wasn't even really sure where to start since this is my first delving into Linux and USB.

Again, this is just guesswork, since you haven't told us anything like enough information to diagnose the problem (eg what kernel are you using, what USB hardware and host controller driver are you using,

I'm using a v2.4.20 kernel with USB and UHCI support compiled directly into the kernel. the CDCEther driver is a module. This is all on a Intel Motherboard in an old Pentium based Gateway.

do other USB bulk-transfer devices work without problems,

The cable modem happens to be the only Linux compatible USB device I've got (well I suppose I could connect my Printer...) so I can't really check that.

what happens when you manually insert the drivers

They insert with no errors. lsmod shows them being loaded.

what errors are you getting in your logs)

The only messages in the logs are the ones I posted earlier...

Thanks...

Matt
