This was with kernel 2.4.20. I couldn't write to the Smartmedia card in a SanDisk SDDR-09 (although I didn't try to format it - call that fear of the unknown :). When I switched to 2.5.69 I found I could write to it. I had other filesystem type problems with 2.5.69, like formatting a swap partition also formatted a neighbouring partiton on a disc, so be careful if you use it. OTOH it seems pretty stable if you aren't doing fancy things with filesystems, I've had a lot less trouble with it than with 2.4.20 when I was trying to get USB to work with that.
