Normally you have some kind of MAC, and that is all you need to worry about 
drivers for. Everything on the RF side is controlled by the MAC, or is 
automatic.

There are a range of chipsets - I'm reasonably familiar with the Atmel 
products, but Prism chips may be better.

I'd suggest getting a couple of devices and having a play around with the 
existing drivers.
