Can you try if the "real" SANE backend (I think it's plustek) does work
or if it produces the same error?

Looks like the first command to the scanner fails. I may be wrong but
it looks like the Epson Kowa backend misidentifies your scanner.
"\33@" looks like some ESC-code for me but this scanner does not
understand these codes. It's more like the Plustek scanners that's why
it's supported by the Plustek backend.
Maybe your version of the Epson Kowa backend is just too old?

Means: EOVERFLOW. Your scanner is confused by a command.

I don't think it's related to the kernel. Use a current version of
SANE, e.g. from:
http://people.debian.org/~aurel32/sane.html
And/or check that the epson kowa stuff is current. If the error does
only happen with the kowa backend, ask Epson kowa for help.
