No, I have tried.
For the camera it is only useful if formated under XP using FAT16.
Afterwards it can be formated in the camera.
Linux however cannot read this:

If I format in under linux, it cannot be read from the camera.
If I would know, which format is acceptable to 
a) the camera
b) linux
then I could do something.
