The ethernet device isn't being recognized properly.

Forget it.  Even 2.4 is flaky, but 2.4.21 or .22 may help a little.
You could also then try 2.6.0-test1.  Be warned that it will be a fair
amount of work to upgrade from a 2.2 kernel, I'd suggest that you get
one of the more recent distributions e.g. SlackwareV9.0 or RedHatV9.0.
