Hallo Stephen, thanks for replying. Sorry about the logs, thought they where attached.
BTW, I also use VMware with Win2K as guest operating system on my RedHat 7.2 box. After a fresh reboot, when plugging the mp3 player in, VMware crashes. After a reboot of the VMware Win2K, I can plug and unplug the device and get a VMware error message box, which says "The specified device appears to be claimed by another driver (usb-storage) on the host operating system which means that the device may be in use. VMware workstation cannot safely take control of the device until the host driver is unloaded." I suppose that's a different kind of problem to be solved, but here I would be happy if the USB device would work with linux alone. The basic idea of using it together with Win2K in VMware, was that maybe it's a problem with a not known filesystem type on the USB storage device. But now back to the original problem, using the USB mp3 player solely with linux (RedHat 7.2) ... dmesg output <snip> ... hdc: empty DMA table? hdc: empty DMA table? hdc: empty DMA table? hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 2 usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x1011/0x1) is not claimed by any active driver.
