BTW, I also use VMware with Win2K as guest operating system on my RedHat 7.2
box. After a fresh reboot, when plugging the mp3 player in, VMware crashes.
After a reboot of the VMware Win2K, I can plug and unplug the device and get
a VMware error message box, which says "The specified device appears to be
claimed by another driver (usb-storage) on the host operating system which
means that the device may be in use. VMware workstation cannot safely take
control of the device until the host driver is unloaded."
I suppose that's a different kind of problem to be solved, but here I would
be happy if the USB device would work with linux alone. The basic idea of
using it together with Win2K in VMware, was that maybe it's a problem with a
not known filesystem type on the USB storage device.

But now back to the original problem, using the USB mp3 player solely with
linux (RedHat 7.2) ...
