This is a 3.5" USB mass storage disk caddie.

I've been having fun and games trying to get it running under Linux. It's
USB 2.0 so, having read the comments at http://www.linux-usb.org, I have
upgraded to the latest 2.4 kernel I could lay my hands on: 2.4.22-rc1

Using that out of the box without changing anything else the caddie appeared
as USB mass storage in usbview, but nothing appeared in /proc/scsi/scsi as
the how to suggested it would. /var/log/messages suggested that the device
wasn't been identified.

Groping around in the dark I discovered ./drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h
and added an entry for the caddie. That improved things somewhat. By
fiddling with the many degrees of freedom I can get to the point where I get
an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi for the caddie thus:

------------8<-----------------------
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: iBuddie Model: 3.5" HDD caddie Rev: 0099
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi2 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: RICOH Model: MP6200S Rev: 2.20
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
------------8<-----------------------

... but /var/log/messages shows it's still not really communicating
properly and it doesn't appear in usbview.

I've tried all the US_PR_ options I could find in unusual_devs.h. Some
produce different results but none work and I feel I could keep going
forever before I find the right combination, if such exists.

Are there any clues documented anywhere on how to configure a new entry in
unusual_devs.h correctly?

Oh yes, and is this list archived anywhere? I was hoping to read the archive
before I bothered you with my problems, but Sourceforge claims there isn't
one.

Paul
