I'm using a USB hard drive on my Linux box (2.4.7 kernel), and I'm noticing some bizarre problems.

Transfers to and from the USB drive are *painfully* slow. I haven't had a chance to run bonnie to measure the performance yet, but will do so later today.

The other problem - the onethat really concerns me - is that the driver seems to periodically pause for no apparent reason. It appears that about every 150-200 MB of transfers, the transfer process will stop for a few seconds. When the transfers stop, *everything* on the machine seems to stop.

Are these know problems? Do more recent releases of the driver address any of these?
