Same here. We've got a couple of Studio Displays (the old blue/white
tubes) attached to x86 Linux machines here. The settings that are in
the monitor right now are generally okay, but they could be better
with some stretching and positioning. They're nice monitors, but
unfortunately have no front-panel controls beyond brightness and
contrast.
Just today, though, things got worse. I put a KVM switch between a
machine and a monitor, and now text mode consoles are completely
wrong: they're only covering about 2/3 of the screen vertically, and
extend several characters past the left edge of the screen.
It was suggested before to try using hiddev to talk to the monitor.
When I plug the monitor into the computer, load uhci/input/hid/etc,
the only thing that shows up in the device tree is the USB hub within
the monitor.
This is stock kernel 2.4.22, BTW.
I know these monitors _can_ be controlled over the USB cable, because
the old G3 Mac they came with could do it. But from what I see,
there's no indication in Linux that they they even exist on the USB
bus, much less conform to the HID monitor specification. I tried two
different monitors on two different machines, and in both cases all
that shows up on the bus is the monitor's hub.
Note that the hub in the monitor _does_ work under Linux. If I plug in
a HID joystick and/or keyboard (barcode scanner, really), the OS and
applications can see them.

Any thoughts on how to get control over this monitor would be
appreciated. The old G3 is still around but out of service. If there
is some easy way to sniff/analyze how it talks to the monitor, I might
be able to get it up and running again with MacOS 9 or linuxppc and do
some testing.
