Hi,

I cannot get linux to find my digital camera (sony DSC-P10). Yes, I have turned on
both the camera and the computer. The camera enters "USB mode", which it only does
when connected to a live USB cable.

I have modified my fstab file (as recommended in the Linux USB sub-system), adding the
line:
 /dev/sda auto /mnt/camera auto noauto,user 0 0
I have also made the directory /mnt/camera.

However, when I attempt to mount this device (after connecting, and turning on, the
camera), I get the following error message:

/dev/sda is not a valid block device

Also, the contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices do not change when the camera is plugged
in.

I have searched the mailing list, the only answered request for help with this
particular problem was a note from "greg" to "alex" that the camera should work with
the 2.6 kernel. It has also been suggested in a more general tip that
unusual_devices.h often needs to be modified for sony cameras. I am willing to believe
both of these tips, but each require a re-compile of the kernel. I am working on this,
too, but have run into a snag installing 2.6-test8 (which I am taking up elsewhere).

I do not think a new kernel (with the proper driver for this camera) will solve all my
problems. Doesn't the comuter need to recognize that something has been connected to
the USB port first? Wouldn't this register in .../devices?

I am running Red Hat 9 on a home-built system. Epox motherboard (VIA chipset, see
below), AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ processor, plugging the camera into the on-board USB
port. No other USB devices are connected to the system.

Here is the output of /proc/bus/usb/devices. Note that the output does not change when
the camera is plugged in.

Any tips/ideas are welcome. Is it going to take a new motherboard?
