Im going to have to look at your note in more detail to see if it helps, (hey, its Friday, its going to be SLOW at the office...), but I did want to attach the following 'ls -laiR /sysfs' on my system.
It should (does) find two disks (hda, hde), three scsi devices (a tape,
a scanner, and a CD-RW), and two USB devices (a UPS and a disk). in answer
to your question:

Note 'host' in both the SCSI in USB trees. Now I understand (expect?)
host entries in the scsi tree, Im guessing that those in the USB tree
are there due to the SCSI emulation, but...
In any case, the ls.
