The mouse is detected as a logitech usb mouse and I guess it is oem. The mouse is a dell with model nrM-UVDEL1 (Optical mouse with 2 buttons and a wheel).
The problem is that the mouse dies after about 6 hours of not moving it.
It has never died when I have been using it but I have only spent perhaps 2 hours at the computer in a row inside X. Anyway after not having used the computer for a few hours to a day and leaving X running the mouse doesn't work anymore. I have to kill X unplug the mouse and plug it in again and then start X. It doesn't help to only restart X.

The /proc/bus/usb/drivers and the files 00[12345]/001 are identical when the mouse is working and when it is not working.
I have attached a tar.gz file containing the /proc/bus/usb directory if that helps.
