I have exactly the same problem as Vincent. In my case it is an external 160GB
USB 2.0 HDD (Samsung). The USB to IDE interface is also a 0x5e3/0x702
(Genesys?). My disc is working perfectly as long as I use USB 1.1, of course
with slightly reduced speed.....

Slightly reduced? =) Massively reduced to the point it's unbearable would be more like it. =)

With USB2, things are worse. I tried it on two different computers, one with a
USB2 card with NEC chip and one with an ALI chip.

- Linux 2.4.19 with the NEC chip -> hang
- Linux 2.4.21 on both computers -> hang
- Linux 2.4.22 on both computers -> hang
- Win2000 on both -> works fine

You're getting hangs? I guess mine isn't so bad then... at least my machine is still useable; I'm not getting any hangs here.

Additionally I did some google'ing and I found some other people having
trouble with this adaptor. All the associated patches I found didn't work in
my case.

Generally, I can mount the drive without problem, and even looking at the
directory works (in most cases). But when I try to write or read bigger
chunks of data, the usb driver dies immediatly (after transferring some kB)
with the message 'usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout'.

Yup, very similar here.

Obviously, I'm not the only one having this problem. I don't really think that
the hardware itself is buggy, as it is working fine under windows. At least
there should be a solution. I would be glad for any hint how to get this
drive running under Linux, as windows is not an option for me.

If I should contribute some more debugging output, please tell me.

Likewise. I really need to get this working.

Glad to hear I'm not alone, but not glad to hear you have the same problems.
