Just curious, because I *really* can't be of any help here... but have you tried a different tool for accessing the camera, like camstream, or camsource? I have trouble with accessing mine via /dev/video0, too, but I *can* access it no problem as /dev/usb/v4l (or whatever it shows up as... I don't have access to the machine at the moment).
