You don't have to have a mount point listed in /etc/fstab.
The mount command can take care of that if you enter the info.

I'm guessing that your question is related to automating the mount
command, although you haven't quite said that.  That's not so easy
in Linux 2.4.  USB storage devices might be at different physical
locations and have different major/minor numbers and it can be
difficult to track and coordinate them.

However, I'm still not following your questions below very well,
so please try asking them again, or someone else out there can
also jump in here and try to answer them.

For Linux 2.4, the linkage is basically reading the kernel message
log (file) to see what major/minor number (and hence /dev/sdX name)
that the device is assigned.

Lots of people have CF cards and ZIP drives working.
What are the problems with them?

You should probably post your kernel messages so that we can see
what's going on and then we can all be more precise instead of
guessing about it.
