I think the USB changes from 2.4.23 to 2.6.0 weren't all improvements. Why not try running 2.4.23 again before blamng the hardware? There have been issues with VIA chipsets. Is that a 133MHZ machine? If so it's probably time to upgrade anyway isn't it? Might be best to stay away from VIA if you want USB to work under Linux right now. Have a look at the working devices list, maybe post a question to see what hardware (and kernels?) people are using with devices like the ones you want to get working. 73, Ged.
