By default, zip drives use /dev/sda4. Not sure that this is going to help you 
though.
SCSI emulation for IDE isn't going to help you - it has no effect in this case 
(except to confuse the issue, if you have an IDE removable drive).
I'm thinking either the disk or the drive are stuffed? Any chance you can try 
the combination on Windows or a Mac?
