I think I have similar hardware (same VIA chipset) and maybe a similar problem (ok, not what you were wanting to hear :-)
.
On 2.4.20 the mouse doesn't quite work (appears to produce some unknown protocol) but is close.

So I upgraded to 2.6.2-r3 and I get things like this:

Feb 2 20:45:58 linux kernel: drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new driver hiddev
Feb 2 20:45:58 linux kernel: input: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [MCT Corp. PS/2 - USB Interface Adaptor] on usb-0000:00:10.1-1
Feb 2 20:45:58 linux kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: ctrl urb status -75 received
Feb 2 20:46:03 linux kernel: usb 2-1: control timeout on ep0out

And strange things happen, mouse output ends up generating keyboard events, as well as interfering with the touchpad

Occasionally it does work but I still have the protocol problem.

Also if I 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' I get a hang...

Gory details follow...

James
