what I mean by control is use the alsamixer device to set the output/recording levels 
for 
the headset. As it is now, I cant even get sound out of it, so thought I would try 
here 
first.

I havent asked alsa yet. I want to make sure that its working correctly at the USB 
layer 
first before I ask them. The headset appears to be in the working devices list. there 
was a 
note that said that playback and recording worked.
