plugging a Prolific IEEE-1284 Controller

Vendor: usb 0x067b "Prolific Technology, Inc."
  Device: usb 0x2305
  SubVendor: "Prolific Technology Inc."
  SubDevice: "IEEE-1284 Controller"

into a notebook with 2.4.20 (Suse 8.2) I get a error:

/var/log/messages:
Feb 22 14:34:29 geri insmod: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by
incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
Feb 22 14:34:29 geri insmod:
  /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB/kernel/drivers/parport/parport_pc.o:
  insmod parport_lowlevel failed
Feb 22 14:34:29 geri kernel: lp: driver loaded but no devices found

dmesg doesn't contain more. Booting the notebook
(BTW: Gericom, about 1,3GHz PIV) with the Prolific Controller
plugged BEFORE booting all is okay.

A external USB-mouse, a USB-keyboard and USB-ISDN-Adapter (FritzCard)
is connected.

BTW:
geri:~ # cat /proc/cmdline
root=/dev/hda6 vga=normal  hdc=ide-scsi hdclun=0 splash=silent splash=silent

Any pointers? APIC?

BTW: in error state, parport_pc is not loaded:
lsmod:
geri:~ # lsmod

ehci-hcd is not used. There are no USB 2.0 devices connected.
Move ehci-hcd to the blacklist?

thx
