A while back I put together a script to integrate USB storage with the desktop. And several people have contributed code to further enhance it - including some very nice partition detection and handling code from Alessandro Fiorino.
I'm releasing a new version that works with 2.6 (and 2.4) It is better able to detect the right SCSI device from a hotplug event. Under 2.4 I can respond to a hotplug event by correctly identifying any USB related SCSI devices and mounting them. Under 2.6 I can identify the exact device plugged in and only mount the one device. It's not in a self installing package because it needs customisation for the different distributions - some editing of scripts, and installation of other software will be required to get it working.
