I have the exact same problem. But I'm quite sure, this is no problem of
Linux as such or a problem of the hardware. Normally I use SuSE-Linux
and have the described problem in versions 8 and 9 (Kernels upto
2.4.21). But if I boot from CD using Knoppix Version 3.1 (Kernel 2.4.20)
I can access the external drive and copy from and to it without any
problems at all. Knoppix is based on Debian.

There must be a difference either in the hotplug-subsystem or in the way
the hardware is handled. But where?

Torsten
