I don't think that was a waste of time at all.  I've been pretty sure
that things have sometimes been working when the driver is loaded as a
module but, not when it's compiled into the kernel.  This seems to be
confirmation of that, thanks.  Maybe it's because the act of unloading
and loading the module performs some initialisation that should be
done when the driver is compiled into the kernel.
