Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if I can find anything on devlabel.

Swapping USB port isn't practical given the way I've set it up. It seems I'm kinda breaking the rules anyway by swapping drives within the same USB adaptor :(

According to Matthew this is fixed in the 2.6 kernel, but I don't think that's an option without major upheaval.

There was a project called devlabel a while back, don't know if it's still going, attempted to solve this problem I think.
