Hi, I'm having trouble with my 300 GB external hard disk (Maxtor personal stroage). It is connected via USB 2.0 to my computers. When transferring data from the external disk to a lokal disk on my machine, I get a transfer rate of about 30 MB/s which is fine. However, if I want to write data onto the external disk, the transfer rate is a bit less than 1 MB/s. I'm using SuSE 9.0, kernel 2.4.21-99 (athlon) on my laptop (acer aspire 1315 LM, AMD 2500+), and on a Dell Optiplex 270 (P4 3 GHz). In order to sort out problems I installed the 2.6.4-7 kernel on the Dell, because it is said to have better USB support. Well, the download rate is still 30 MB/s, but the upload rate dropped to 500 kB/s. Under WinXP I achieve 30 MB/s in both directions on both machines, thus I figure that this asymmetry is due to some driver problems or some configuration issues. Since I'm not very familiar with such hardware issues, I'd welcome any help I can get. Can someone please point me into the right direction? If you need further information that can be obtained by some commands, please let me know and I'll post it right away.
