It works ok. but I had to do a ugly hack in my startup scripts to get multiple LUN support to work in the Red Hat/Fedora kernels. They really ought to fix that someday.
You can usually find a single media type reader for around $10 most places and occasionally a Free after rebate deal at OfficeMax.
