There's some information in the kernel sources under 
Documentation/driver-model and Documentation/filesystems/sysfs.txt.  
There's also information on the web -- look at 
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-FAQ and search 
for other information about libsysfs and udev.
