And I'm wondering if this thread might be related to something that 
just happened here.  This machine runs 24/7/365 normally.  I came 
into the room intending to log into my bank and pay some bills. 
Moving the mouse to unblank the screen worked ok, but at that point 
the leds in the usb mouse went off, and I had to ctl+alt+backspace 
out of X and reboot to restore my mouse.  And, during the reboot, 
when gpm was started, it didn't center on the screen like it always 
has been before.

Could there be a connection?  kernel is 2.6.7-mm6 locally built.
