The differences between 2.4 and 2.6 are quite significant.  Whether they 
are related in any way to your failure is a different question...  In any 
case, I recommend doing your testing with 2.6 for two reasons: It's more 
robust, and the Linux USB developers are more familiar with it.

If the system isn't badly hung, you might even be able to log in over a 
network connection.
