Good to know I'm not the only one seeing this.
Since my first post I have tried this device on two different linux boxes on three ports each using a different chipset. They all take a long time to mount. Without fail. For the heck of it I tried it on a friend's Win2k box and it seemed not to have the delay. So it probably is the device. I tried contacting Sandisk about it, but all they did was repeat the party line saying they don't support Linux. I noticed on http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/index.php a couple of other people having the same problem. I guess the upshot is, for anyone following this, is that these devices are hit and miss in terms of compatibility with linux. Buy at your own risk.

(Sorry for the delayed reply.)

Yes. I've had this happen on a 2.4.22 kernel (Slackware 9.1) in the past. I cannot reproduce it at the moment though. It mounted immediately both times I tried it.

It's never been completely predictable as to when/if the delayed (a couple of minutes?) mount happens.

I believe I've seen it occur on multiple (diverse) PCs, but my notes are sketchy and my memory is even sketchier. I've never been able to put my finger on it. For a while, when it happened, I thought it was hanging up entirely, but I learned to just "wait it out".

By the way, it's 'Cruzer Mini', not 'Mini Cruzer' -- mine is model SDCZ2-256 (256 MB). It was formatted (by me) for 2 partitions -- 'FAT16' and 'Linux'. It may be a coincidence, but I don't recall having problems with it until after I re-partitioned it from the initial configuration (1 big FAT16 partition, I think).

The Cruzer Mini mounted immediately on my Toshiba Satellite 2100CDT laptop, which has just been re-installed with Slackware 10.0. I tried it with the 2.4.26 kernel and the 2.6.7 kernel -- no problems with either (except that 2.6.7 wants an explicit '-t vfat' to mount the FAT16 partition, unlike 2.4.26, which is happy with 'auto' in '/etc/fstab').

Maybe the device is just buggy, as hinted at earlier by Alan Stern. Either way, I'd like to know more about why it sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't.

If I see this happen again, I'll try to pin this down -- i.e. When does it happen? On what hardware? Only if Cruzer Mini is plugged in after booting? (etc). But for now, at least you know you're not the only one seeing this problem with the Sandisk Cruzer Mini.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to try.
