Alan,
I've installed and rebooted 2.6.7 and still get problems mounting the
disk.
The syslog messages look much better at switch-on, but when I try to
mount the camera, it reports:

Aug  2 19:21:49 felix kernel: FAT: bogus number of reserved sectors
Aug  2 19:21:49 felix kernel: VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev 
sda.

Unfortunately I have the module debugging turned off, so I'll recompile the
module with it turned on again and report further...

Should 2.6.7 be up-to-date enough?
