Mike: Can you collect another usb-storage debugging log for me? I'd like to get a clean log showing what happens when you plug in the DVD drive with the usb-storage module already loaded. The previous logs you collected were full of those random USB disconnect/error events, which makes them poor candidates for checking the underlying system behavior.
Maybe to avoid those random errors you could try moving the cable to a different USB port on the computer.
