More often than not, the cable is the culprit with the front panel USB
and Firewire connectors.  All of the ones I have seen were neither
shielded, nor twisted and as we all know Firewire (and I believe USB)
are both differential signals.  The usability of the bad cables would
depend on how noisy the area is and how fast the signalling on the
wires are.
