No I've just 5 minutes ago sent it back!
However, I did download the new "Mandrake Move" CD-only Linux yesterday and this morning it mounted the 250Gb just fine, twice! It is
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.3-15mdk #1 Fri Jul 2 22:09:29 MDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
but of course I don't have the sources.
I think the makers of Cd-demo Linux distros are more thorough in getting all hardware-workaround patches together because they are more likely to be used on a variety of hardware. "Mandrake Move" even has a USB-pen version for PCs that will boot on USB devices.
I've asked again in comp.os.linux.hardware if anyone else is/was working on this, with no reply (that I can see) yet.
