Sorry, but this is not "the usual problem".  And a hardware defect is not
so unlikely as you think.

I investigated more on the point. I tried: 2 (new) Samsung HDDs and one (old) Maxtor HDD. All of them are ok according to SMART-tests and the old disk is in use for a year or so. I tried: two different USB case, both same type, both same chipset (according to what i can see). I tried Linux (2.6.8), Windows 2000 and XP.


The outcome is, that the read error occurs in all combinations on all OSes.

It seems to me, that the problem is in the chipset. And I have no idea what to do on that, beside of contacting the vendor.
