I have a similar problem. My usb 2 drive is initially allocated
/dev/sda. If I remove it and plug it in again it is allocated /dev/sdb .
Then/dev/sdc etc. Eventually it becomes /dev/sda again. 

Debian kernel 2.6.8-1-686 - Trident Jetflash USB2 drive - GA8S661FXM
motherboard.
