You're right.  Do you have the ub driver configured (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB)?  
It might prevent usb-storage from handling your device.

If that's not the problem, can you post /proc/bus/usb/devices?

And by the way, why does a CD burner have a product name like "ViPowER 
USB2.0 SmartCable"?
