Actually, the current driver version is a _lot_ better.  In fact the HD
is functioning well enough that I have successfully run e2fsck!

After adding your debug patches, I did a side by side compare with the
2.6.10 transport.c and added the bits that seemed usable.  FWIW, I've
attached a pristine...current patch for what I've now got.

It begins to look like whatever caused the 2.6.8.1's transport.c to have
problems has been fixed in 2.6.10.

I'll let you know as I learn more..
