Ahh, no now that I look at my config file. Thanks. I was hoping that would explain why my 2.6.10 kernel doesn't find my usb device on the bus (lsusb finds the 4 hubs but no device) until I unplug/plugin the cable.

The read/64 message indicates a non-fatal error, as you"ve seen.  If you
care to, you may be able to avoid it by loading usbcore.ko with the

        old_scheme_first=y

Should usbcore.ko be part of 2.6.10?  I pulled down 2.6.10 in a tarball
and usbcore.ko isn't part of the package.  There's no usbcore.ko!?  Nothing
built at least.
