Did you restart the supermount daemon, or tell it to reread its 
configuration file?  Did you try mounting the device by hand, to be 
certain the sync option wasn't set?

Actually, I don't know for certain that "-o sync" will cause those TEST 
UNIT READY commands to be sent, but I can't think of anything else that 
would do it.

Could be.  Did you see the TEST UNIT READY commands with your friend's 
pendrive?

Read through the udev documentation.  There's a whole document explaining
how to set up your own rules; I don't know the details.  I think you need
to add an extra configuration file with a special rule matching the
pendrive.
