I don't think that is so bad. My laptop hard disk gets; /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 2176 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1088.00 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 78 MB in 3.05 seconds = 25.57 MB/sec
so not twice as fast as you see and I'm sure it will be a lot less in "real life".
