You should try upgrading to the 2.6.10 kernel.  I think some of the USB 
improvements that they made for 2.6.10 fix these sorts of problems.  I had a 
USB device that wouldn't work on 2.6.9 but would work on 2.6.10.  Under 2.6.9, 
it got this kind of error.
