I've been able to successfully set up udev rules to symbolically link the special files created for usb devices to meaningful names, and then refer to those meaningful names elsewhere. That's probably the best approach.
okay, it may be a approach. How did you realise it? >
USB is trying to solve a very hard problem (letting people plug random devices in to random places at random times), and it's hard to see how they could have done much better with it.
you're right. That's exactly what consumers want. But commercials/
business not! Business needs stability, USB devices like printers are plugged ALL the time. May be that cameras are plugged out, but
business don't need to plug in at a random place. It would be enough
to plug it in at the same place.
I would hope, barring any physical properties that would cause instability (heat, explosions, etc.) software should be responsible for making a device stable even, if needed, blocking it. Hopefully, one shouldn't have to worry about stability of a system if some employee plugs something into it.
People are going to plug things in, even in places there not suppose to (specially at work). One can only write the popper software to handle instability of this kind.
My guess there is a lot of companies that need to plug things in everywhere, randomly, anytime and maintain stability.
btw, I would also like stability too! ;) Isn't that one of the reasons we picked up cursing in the 90's while using MS products?
How did you realise "udev rules"?
thx Ekkard
