I let this one hang out in my inbox for a while.  I haven't looked
into the issue again until now.  Looks like Adam Richter's suggestion
right off was right.  It appears that the reader is only showing the
first partition to me.  I don't know why I had trouble before mounting
it, but now I am able to mount just /dev/sdb without the partition
reference.  Maybe I've changed something in the last three months.
