I had a simillar problem with my ipod; I concluded that some kernel
versions have and some don't have the necessary stuff to identify it.

I have fixed it by getting the configuration from an ubuntu live cd
and used that with my kernel source (was using 2.6.9 + benh's sleep
patch 7)

I still don't know which option is the one that didn't allowed me to
see the ipod as an USB stick.
